Genus Cyclopterus

Cyclopterus [Artedi] Linnaeus, 1758

Body compressed laterally, especially head and tail. First dorsal fin present, but covered by thick layer of skin to form a high crest; crest more prominent in larger individuals. Bony tubercles present, arranged in 3 widely separated rows of large flattened tubercles on each side of body, smaller tubercles scattered between rows. Gill openings large, extending below level of upper pectoral finray. Disc large, slightly longer than wide, three-quarters head length or less and about 1.5 times length of anal fin base. Anus about midway between posterior margin of disc and anal fin. Pyloric caeca present 36-79. Vertebrae 28-29.
