Diagnosis: eye in head 1.9-2.2. Two simple strong spines on preoperculum and suboperculum. Dl III; D2 14 (rarely 12-15); A 13. Colour: pale dirty yellowish, back and sides with irregular red-orange blotches varying in size; first dorsal fin brown. Size: to 9 cm.

Habitat: benthic, possibly on muddy grounds, at 170-585 m. Food: small bottom invertebrates. Reproduction: no data, eggs and larvae possibly pelagic.

Distribution: recently recorded from the Josephine Bank, Madeira, Morocco and Great Meteor Bank (eastern Atlantic). Elsewhere, western Atlantic, Florida to Georgia.
