Diagnosis: loop of luminous tissue on side of body nearly circular, its posterior-most extent about halfway between pectoral and pelvic fin insertions. Colour: head and body black, except pale loop. Size: to about 13.6 cm.

Distribution: one record from north of Madeira at about 35° N. Elsewhere, North Atlantic west of 55° W between 19° and 32°; south western Atlantic from 9° and 23° S.
