Diagnosis: dorsal finrays 13 (12-14); anal finrays 13, pectoral finrays 10-11 (12). Gillrakers 6-7 + 1+ 13-15, total 20-23. AO 5(6) + 6-7 (5), total 11-12 (10). Vn in adult males larger and more bar-like than in adult females. Size: to 85 mm.
Habitat: high-oceanic, mesopelagic: day at 375-750 m; night at 40-550 m (maximum abundance at 100 m). Food: no data. Reproduction: sexually mature from about 70 mm.
Distribution: endemic Atlantic: broadly tropical pattern (?holo-eurytropical subpattern), generally south of 20° N to 37° S in western South Atlantic. Isolates to 40° N (western sector) and to west of Madeira (eastern sector).
Eggs, larvae and young stages. No data.
