Long east-west stretched sea between Europe and Africa connected with the Atlantic by the narrow Strait of Gibraltar, and artificially connected with the Red Sea (and therefore the Indian Ocean) by the Suez Canal. Also a part of the common name of many fishes living in the Mediterranean like Mediterranean flagfin, Mediterranean grenadier, etc.
