Marine molluscs of the class Polyplacophora. Chitons are mostly found in shallow water or inter tidal pools. They are primitive, highly adapted to adhering to a hard substrate. The shell is a construction of overlapping, broad plates. The mantle and foot create an excellent suction device. Chitons are herbivores.
