Diagnosis: rings 28-31 + 60-69, D 37-47, subdorsal rings 11-7 + 2-4, C 4-9. Colour: brown to yellowish, with narrow dark stripe on side of head and with dark-margined pale bars on side of body, sometimes spotted with grey. Size: to 60 cm or more (females) or about 40 cm (males).

Habitat: oceanic, and inshore waters amongst algae. Food: no data. Reproduction: breeding principally during June-July. Females with 1,000 or more ovarian eggs, about 1.2 mm in diameter; early free-living young about 11-12 mm TL.

Distribution: Iceland and Norwegian coasts (Tromsø) southwards to the Azores. Enters western Baltic Sea, absent from Mediterranean and Black Seas.
