Diagnosis: skin very rough. Head in dorsal view not uniformly roundish, indented somewhat in anterior part (maximum head width usually less than head length); occipital protuberances usually pointed; D VIII-IX + 13-15; A 11; P 18; lateral line pores 11. Urogenital papilla small, less than 6% SL. Colour: greyish-brown with 3 broad, dark, vertical bands on side of body; pectoral fin dark greyish with light border. Size: to at least 16 cm SL, usually to 6-10 cm.

Habitat: benthic at about 300-1500 m. Temperatures about 0° C.Food: no data. Reproduction: no data.

Distribution: recorded from Arctic Ocean in Kara Sea, other possible areas of occurrence include off the Faroes and north-eastern Spitzbergen. Western coast of Greenland from Upernavik to Thule (Nielsen, Bertelsen, 1992) Elsewhere, Beaufort Sea off Alaska.
