Diagnosis: dorsal fin with 14-16 spines and 13-17 (mostly 14-15) rays; anal fin with 3 spines and 7-11 (more often 9) rays; pectoral fin with 18-20 rays; 32-40 (more often 34) scales on lateral line. Vertebrae 30-32. Colour: bright red. Size: to 55 cm, usually to 40 cm.
Habitat: benthic and bathypelagic species, mostly offshore, not rare above the great ocean depths; found between 300 and 910 m. Behaviour: gregarious throughout life. Food: euphausiids, hyperiids, cephalopods, chaetognaths, small fishes. Reproduction: ovoviviparous; insemination of the females in August-September (Barents Sea) or from September to mid-December (off Iceland); fertilization of the oocytes during January February (Barents Sea) or in March (Iceland); release of larvae in April-May or June.
Distribution: in Clofnam area, in the Norwegian Sea from Lofoten Is., northward to the western and northern coasts of Spitsbergen, in the southern part of the Barents Sea rarely to 35° E, on the Iceland-Faroes Ridge, around Iceland and along the coast of Greenland. Elsewhere from the south-eastern coast of Baffin I. southward to latitude of Long Island.
