Diagnosis: dorsal finrays 16-17 (15-19); anal finrays 20 (19-22, rarely 18); pectoral finrays 12-13. Gillrakers 5 (46) + 1 + 11(10-12), total 17 (15-19). AO 7 (8-9) + 8 (7), total 15 (14-17). Size: over 235 mm.

Habitat: high-oceanic, mesopelagic. Canaries: upper 150 m at night. Bermuda: day at 700-1,150 m; night at 150-350 m and 900- 1,000 m. Size: stratification with depth during the day. Adults probably non-migratory near Bermuda. Food: no data. Reproduction: sexually mature from about 152 mm.

Distribution: Atlantic, more common in eastern sector than in western sector: broadly tropical pattern (thermophobic eurytropical subpattern), mainly between 9° N and 10° S (night depths 300-700 m) with extensions to 36° N and 27° S (night depths 700-2,000 m) in eastern sector; in western sector between 40° N and 10° S; apparently absent in upwelling region between 9° and 17° N; present in Agulhas water pockets in eastern South Atlantic. Elsewhere: Indian Ocean (between 0° and 8° N) and Pacific (around the Philippines).

Eggs, larvae and young stages. No data.
