Diagnosis: eyes vestigial. Jaw very long, covered with shagreen-like bands of minute teeth. Long gillrakers on first arch 11-16. Dorsal finrays 8-10 anal finrays 12-15; pelvic finrays 8; pectoral finrays 9-10; principal caudai rays 15-18. Top and sides of head covered with scales. Lateral line scales 65-75. Vertebrae 65-69. Colour: body attenuate, bearing brown to black pigmentation over an off-white ground colour; the dark pigment is more concentrated at intervals to form 6-8 bands around the body. Size: to 12 cm.

Habitat: abyssal between 4,250 and 5,700 m. Rare, probably solitary. Food: probably small benthopelagic crustacea. Reproduction: as for genus.

Distribution: seven records east of and three west of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge between lat. 1° N and 30° N. One record from the Agulhas Basin of the south-western Indian Ocean.

Otoliths (sagitta). No data.
