Diagnosis: Dl V-VII; D2 29-32; A II + 28-34; caudal fin slightly concave; about 80 scales on the lateral line. Colour: upper parts greenish- brown with darker points on the head; sides yellowish-white crossed b oblique lines, blue and yellow alternating, often interrupted. Size: to 4 cm SL, usually 25-30.

Distribution: Mediterranean (very common), Adriatic, Black Sea, eas ern Atlantic from Norway to Morocco and Madeira.
