Diagnosis: adipose eyelid weakly developed. Upper jaw ending before anterior margin of eye. Both jaws essentially with a single row of blunt, conical teeth, but an inner row of smaller conical teeth also present in upper jaw of young. Shoulder girdle (cleithrum) margin smooth, without papillae. Gillrakers (including rudiments) 11-13 upper, 24-28 lower on first gill arch. Dorsal fin VIII+ I + 24-26; anal fin II + I + 22-23; spinous dorsal fin high, longest spine longer than length of soft dorsal fin lobe. Straight lateral line with 6-15 anterior scales and 20-32 scutes. Colour: pale greenish-blue above, silvery below; a yellow, midlateral stripe which widens posteriorly; fins dusky yellow; a black spot on postero-dorsal margin of opercle. Size: to about 80 cm fork length, common to 40 cm.

Habitat: usually inshore, feeds on the bottom; a schooling species. Food: benthic invertebrates. Reproduction: see family.

Distribution: Portugal, the Azores and Madeira, and Mediterranean (not common). Elsewhere, eastern Atlantic: the Canaries, the Cape Verde Is., Ascension I. and St. Helena; also in temperate or subtropical waters of Bermuda, southern Brazil, South Africa, Japan, Australia, New Zealand and Hawaiian Is.
