Diagnosis. eye in head 2.4-3.0. Preopercular spine formula - 2/- 1 (see fig.), Dl III; D2 8 (rarely 7); A 9 (rarely 8). Colour: greyish-yellow, with large faint blotches and small dark spots. First dorsal in adult males white with black blotch, in females and young males black. Size. to 8 cm, usually 4-5 cm.
Habitat: benthic on sandy and muddy grounds, at 10-150 m. Food: small bottom invertebrates, mainly worms and crustaceans. Reproduction: April-September (Mediterranean): eggs and larvae pelagic.
Distribution: northern Mediterranean, Gibraltar to the coast of Israel, including the Adriatic, Aegean and western and northern Black Sea; also Algeria and Tunisia; rarely in the eastern Atlantic and off the Portuguese coast.
