Diagnosis: 9 or 10 free spines in front of dorsal fin. Caudal peduncle with a well-developed lateral keel. Scute development variable. Size: less than 7 cm SL.
Habitat: a largely freshwater species only rarely entering brackish water. Behaviour similar to Gasterosteus aculeatus. Food: small invertebrates. Reproduction: similar to G. aculeatus.
Distribution: coastal lands around the North and the Baltic Seas, also circumpolar across northern Eurasia and northern America.
