Diagnosis: serial photophores in lateral row (OA) 29-32, of which 17-21 behind pelvic fin insertion (VAL); 43-47 photophores in ventral row to tail (IC); ventral row forming a pronounced U-shaped bend between pectoral fin bases. Barbel less than 1.3 times head length, slender, without modified tip. Dorsal finrays 15-17. Colour: head and body black; pale patches of luminous tissue in larger specimens, the most prominent on head anterior to eye, a pair on each side (one above the other) over pectoral fin, a long patch ventral to pelvic fins and one above and anterior to anal fin origin. Size: to about 120 mm.

Distribution: mostly south of about 35° N, but known from off the coast of Portugal. Elsewhere, across the North Atlantic between 30° and 37° N, extending in the eastern Atlantic to about 10° N, and found in the south-eastern Atlantic at 16° to 22° S.
Eggs, larvae and young stages. None known.
