Diagnosis: head moderately large; eye about equal to snout, somewhat before midpoint of head; upper jaw reaching to a little beyond eye. Dorsal fin far back on body, with 20-22 finrays; pectoral fins small, with 5-7 finrays; pelvic fins with 5-6 finrays (without splint bone); anal fin below dorsal fin, with 20-22 finrays. Skin deciduous; scales in lateral line 50-57, ring-like and on edge, absent elsewhere; light organs present on body, but often rubbed off. Vertebrae (pre-ural) 20-22 + 26-28 = 47-50. Testes formed of discrete separate lobes (even in immature males). Colour: black. Size: to 32 cm.

Habitat: engybenthic on continental slope, mainly at 600-1,200 m. Food: no data. Reproduction: ovarian eggs large (to 3.7 mm in diameter).

Distribution: Madeira, the Azores and off western Scotland. Elsewhere, southward to 6°51'N, also western North Atlantic and south-eastern Pacific.
