Diagnosis: snout pointed, larger than eye, which is before midpoint of head; upper jaw long, reaching about an eye diameter behind eye; teeth on premaxilla and lower jaw in more than one series, especially near front, but no teeth at tip of lower jaw; gillrakers 3-5 + 1 + 10-14 = 14-19; branchiostegal rays 8-9. Pyloric caeca 8-11. Dorsal fin moderately far back on body, with 18-20 finrays; pectoral fins with 9-11 finrays; pelvic fins with 8-9 finrays (plus a splint bone); anal fin origin behind dorsal fin origin, with 14-17 finrays. Vertebrae 25-28 + 21-23 = 47-50. Colour: blackish, with smooth tough black skin on head. Size: to at least 53 cm.
Habitat: engybenthic at 1,500-2,300 m. Food: no data. Reproduction: ovarian eggs large (to 4.0 mm in diameter).
Distribution: from slopes off Morocco northward to south-west of the British Isles. Elsewhere, western North Atlantic, from off New England southward to the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean.
