Genus Haplophryne

Haplophryne Regan, 1912

Females distinct from other ceratioids in having a compressed preopercular spin with 3-5 radiating cusps and unpigmented skin; teeth numerous and relatively short; esca sessile on snout; no barbel. Males parasitic, with retained premaxillaries and teeth in jaws; upper and lower denticular teeth small not meeting anteriorly when jaws are closed, skin unpigmented. Largest females about 50 mm, largest unattached males 12-14 mm, largest parasitic male 12 mm.
