Genus Scyliorhinus

Scyliorhinus Blainville, 1816

Snout shorter than width across the mouth; a labial furrow present only on lower jaw, not continuous around the mouth corners. Upper lip slightly overlapping the lower lip at corners of mouth; nasal barbels reduced or absent; nostril either separate from mouth, or joined to mouth only by a very shallow groove; spiracle small, near eye. Two dorsal fins, the first slightly larger than the second; origin of first dorsal fin over or behind middle of the pelvic fin base.
Two eggs laid at time, in horny capsules, oblong with long, muchtwisted tendrils at each corner that twine around seaweeds, rocks, etc. The young hatch about 6 months after laying.
