Diagnosis: dorsal finrays 14-15; anal finrays 12-13. Colour: bluish-grey above and white below. Young with 8-9 cross-bands on back. Size: to 60 cm SL.

Habitat: pelagic, not far from coasts. Food: crustaceans, squids. Reproduction: no data.

Distribution: Mediterranean, eastern Atlantic from Orkney Is. and the Azores to South Africa (but very rare in the north). Elsewhere, Bermuda, western Atlantic, Indian Ocean and western Pacific.
