Diagnosis: rings 17-19 + 46-54, D 24-28, subdorsal rings 3-2 + 4- 6. Colour: near black to olive; lower part of side and ventral surfaces white to yellowish; sometimes marbled or with pale bars or spots. Size: to 17 cm (females) or 15 cm (males) TL.
Habitat: intertidal to about 30 m, usually among rocks or holdfasts and lower branches of algae. Food: no data. Reproduction: mostly brooding May-September; males with about 150 eggs (1.0-1.2 mm diameter); early free-living young 9-10 mm TL.
Distribution: British Isles, Atlantic coasts of Norway from vicinity of Bergen to the Kattegat, and from Belgium southwards to Morocco. Elsewhere, from off Rio de Oro.
