Diagnosis: head 23-26% of SL; horizontal diameter of eye 15.5-21% of head length. Teeth simple, in about 18 very oblique, widely spaced rows. Gill opening very long, extending almost to lower pectoral fin lobe. Lower pectoral fin lobe composed of 3 closely spaced rays bound together forming a single filament, much longer than head. Size: to 310 mm SL.

Habitat: benthopelagic or pelagic below 1,500 m, over soft mud bottoms in areas where bottom temperature is below O °C and salinities are about 35‰.

Food: bathypelagic and planktonic crustaceans. Reproduction: spawning may occur only once a year, and be protracted. Nearly ripe females have been captured in early summer, ripe females in December, and fry in August. May have 70 or more ripe eggs of up to 7 mm diameter.

Distribution: common in the Norwegian Sea; known also from the Faroe Trough and from Baffin Bay. In Clofnam area, apparently restricted to north of the Wyville Thomson Ridge and the Iceland-Faroe Rise.
