Diagnosis: head cavernous with weak ossification; top of head scaleless; second preopercular spine subequal to or longer than first and third preopercular spines; anteriormost preorbital spine as long as the posterior two. Dorsal fin with 12 spines and 10 rays; anal fin with 3 spines and 4-6 (rarely) rays; pectoral fin with 20-25 rays. Body covered with very tiny cycloid scales. Colour: greyish or pinkish. Size: to 20 cm, usually to 8 cm.

Habitat: offshore species, living on or near the bottom at 180-700 m. Food: no data. Reproduction: no data.

Distribution: in the Clofnam area, Madeira and Morocco. Elsewhere southward to South Africa throughout the Gulf of Guinea, Cape Verde Is., in the western Atlantic from 39°57' N to northern Brazil; in the Pacific Ocean, Japan, Western Australia, Fiji, Hawaii, Indo-Australian Archipelago and the Philippines; in the Indian Ocean, from Natal to Zanzibar, western coast of India, Sri Lanka, Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea. This species is the most widely distributed scorpaenid.
