Diagnosis: head large, snout about equal to orbit diameter (11-12% of SL); preorbital bone usually with 2 spines over maxilla; sub-orbital ridge with 3 or 4 spinous points; upper post-temporal spine present; other spines as for the genus. Occipital pit fairly shallow. Pores at symphysis of lower jaw small and separate. Supra-ocular tentacle small; large flap associated with posterior pre-orbital spine; large flap at fourth or fifth preopercular spines; body skin appendages fairly well developed. Dorsal fin with 12 spines and 9 rays; pectoral fin with 18-20 rays and not reaching over the first anal spine. Scales on sides ctenoid; 45-50 vertical rows of scales; most of head naked; pectoral fin base and chest naked. Vertebrae 24. Gillrakers 13-16 (4-5 + 9-11). Colour: general coloration pink-yellow; most of the head brownish; pigment on body usually concentrated in several large brownish blotches; sometimes posterior part of spinous dorsal fin with brown pigment, but not in a conspicuous spot. Size: to 50 cm, usually to 25 cm.

Habitat: offshore continental species on soft bottoms between 100 and 600 m. Food: crustaceans and fishes. Reproduction: spawning in August and September.

Distribution: known in the eastern Atlantic from Gulf of Cadiz to Senegal and in western Mediterranean; not recorded in Adriatic Sea and eastern Mediterranean.
