Diagnosis: dorsal finrays 13-14 (rarely 12 or 15); anal finrays 17 (16-18); pectoral finrays 12-13 (11-14). Gillrakers 4 (rarely 3) + 1 + 9 (rarely 8 or 10), total 14 (rarely 13 or 15). AO 6 (5) + 7 (6- 8), total 13 (12-14). Size: to 85 mm.

Habitat: high-oceanic, mesopelagic. Canaries: night in upper 150 m. Bermuda: day at 600-1,000 m; night at 40-250 m and 850-900 m (maximum abundance at 100-150 m). Equatorially, specimens at shallower depths at night (50-100 m) than is usually the case. Non-migrants all juveniles (Bermuda). Food: no data. Reproduction: sexually mature from about 55 to 60 mm.

Distribution: Atlantic: broadly tropical pattern (holo-eurytropical subpattern), between 37° N and 25° S (eastern sector) and between 40° N and 32° S (western sector), but absent over Mauritanian upwelling region (18°-7° N, east of 30° W).
