Diagnosis: dorsal finrays 92-102; anal finrays 71-76. Lateral line scales about 110. Colour: blackish or brownish. Size: to just above 100 cm SL.
Habitat: an Arctic species found at 200-2,000 m, but often caught pelagically and supposed to swim on the ventral edge and not on the blind side. Food: prawns and fishes. Reproduction: spawns in April-July at 3-5 °C. Commercial importance: mainly caught on long lines and is important both locally and for export.
Distribution: eastern Atlantic, from England to northern Norway, Iceland and eastern Greenland. Elsewhere, from Newfoundland to north-western Greenland and in the northern part of the Pacific.
