Diagnosis: Dl VII; D2 24-27; A II + 26-29; caudal fin slightly concave or straight. 69-70 scales on the lateral line. Colour: yellowish- brown with many black blotches along the sides. Caudal fin with some spots on the basal half and dark edge. Size: to 40 cm SL, usually 25-30.

Distribution: Mediterranean, Adriatic, eastern Atlantic from Portugal to Angola.
