Diagnosis: ventro-lateral skin folds about as long as pectoral fins. Dorsal rays 53-59; anal rays 26-32. Lateral line branched. Vertebrae 64-72 (mode 68). Colour: back golden brown or pinkish, belly silvery. Size: to 28 cm SL.
Habitat: typically offshore over shell-gravel, also inshore where shellgravel beaches occur. Food: plankton. Reproduction: summer batch spawner, ripe fish occuring from March to September in North Atlantic, but probably with more restricted spawning periods for each population, and possibly a winter/spring spawner in the Mediterranean.
Distribution: eastern North Atlantic from the southern coast of Norway and the Shetlands (61° N) to Spain (36° N) including all coasts of the British Isles and the North Sea, but not the Baltic, and extending along northern Mediterranean coasts to at least 3° E.
