Diagnosis: Iong and slender body. Rostral spine long. Anterior gill arch with 5-6 elongate rakers. Dorsal finrays 125-140; anal finrays 115-120. Colour: yellowish- or pinkish- brown on back, whitish ventrally; dorsal and anal fins black-edged. Size: to about 250 mm SL.
Habitat: benthic from a few to 150 m. Food: no data. Reproduction:
oviparous.
Distribution: western Mediterranean, from Gibraltar to the Adriatic; also eastern Atlantic, from southern England to Morocco. Elsewhere, southward to Senegal.
