Diagnosis: eye in head 2.0-2.7. Preopercular spine formula 1 2/- 1 (see fig), strong antrorse spine at base. Dl IV; D2 9 (rarely 8 or 10); A 9 (rarely 8 or 10). Colour: light brown, with dark and silvery spots. Second dorsal in males with 4 horizontal rows of dark spots, in females with 2 rows. Size: to 16 cm (males), 10 cm (females).
Habitat: benthic, sandy bottoms, at 45-650 m. Food: small bottom invertebrates, mainly worms, snails and crustaceans. Reproduction: April-August (North Sea), January-August (Mediterranean); eggs and larvae pelagic.
Distribution: whole Mediterranean including Adriatic and Aegean, but not in the Black Sea; in Atlantic, southern and western Iceland and Norway south to Senegal.
