Diagnosis: P 17-22. Esca of females with a pair of internally pigmented anterior appendages; filamentous medial appendage, and a posterior appendage consisting of a swollen base and a compressed distal crest with 1 to several anterior or distal filaments. Males with 17-22 upper and 23-27 lower denticles. Larvae, males and juvenile females with a group of subdermal melanophores on caudal peduncle.

Distribution: all oceans, larvae and three females in Clofnam area (one off Gibraltar, one off Ireland and one between Iceland and Greenland).
