Diagnosis: chin barbel absent. Jaw teeth in a narrow row 2-3 teeth wide, some teeth notably larger; no teeth on vomer or palatines. Anal fin not indented. Light organ present as a small, naked patch on the belly. Colour: mouth pale. Size: to 30 cm SL, mature at 15 cm.
Habitat: benthopelagic, generally at depths of 250-500 m. Locally abundant. Food: no data. Reproduction: possibly a spring spawner in the Mediterranean. Larvae pelagic.
Distribution: Portugal to the Aegean Sea, around Corsica, Sardinia, and Sicily; Algeria to at least the Canaries. (The southern extent of the range is subject to doubt as records from between the Canaries and Angola are generally the result of confusion with Brosmiculus imberbis) Also at Madeira and Great Meteor Bank.
