Accepted name: Gaidropsarus vulgaris (Cloquet, 1824) (updated 2009-06-25)
Diagnosis: a large three-bearded rockling, the head moderately broad, bluntly rounded and round in cross-section. Second dorsal finrays 56-64 (mode 61); anal finrays 46-52 (mode 49). Vertebrae 46-49 (usually 48). Colour: warm chocolate brown blotches on top of head and on back, extending down sides as rounded blotches and bars; creamy ventrally (often pink in life). Size: to 43 cm SL.
Habitat: offshore on rocky grounds at depths of 100-120 m, but also on soft bottoms. Food: fishes and decapod crustaceans. Reproduction: spawns in January-March in British waters, but December-January in southern Europe; young stages described, but confused with those of G. mediterraneus.
Distribution: Atlantic coasts from Norway (62° 31' N) to Portugal, also western Mediterranean basin and Adriatic.
