Diagnosis: barbel length about 2 1/2-2 3/4 times in SL, its stem black; tip of barbel with an unpigmented ovoid bulb, alongside which is a pale tentacle as long as or slightly longer than bulb. Dorsal finrays 13-17 (usually 15-17). Photophores in ventral row between pectoral and pelvic fin insertions (PV) 23-27 (usually 25-26). Colour: head and body black no prominent white spots on head. Size: to almost 24 cm.

Distribution: northward to just north of Madeira. Elsewhere, across the Atlantic between about 35° N and 8° S, but not known between about 10° and 20° N; Indian and Pacific Oceans.
