Diagnosis: snout equal to or greater than one-half orbit. Anal fin base longer than caudal peduncle. Scale pockets with little or no dark pigment, body usually pale. Size: to about 17.5 cm.

Habitat: mesopelagic. Usually caught in small aggregations, apparently carries on daily vertical migrations. Food: plankton. Reproduction: pelagic eggs and larvae.

Distribution: widely distributed in tropical and subtropical Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans. Taken in southern part of area.
