Ahliesaurus Bertelsen, Krefft and Marshall, 1976
Head small. Posterior infra-orbital bones very narrow, shaped as simple half-tubes without any expansions or lobes; lower jaw with three large primary pores in a single row on the anterior half of the jaw, secondary pores few, minute. Pelvic fins inserted below or just in front of dorsal fin origin. Skeleton feebly ossified, vertebrae 42-50; axial muscles reduced, hypaxial and epaxial muscle masses remaining remote from each other along ventral and dorsal midlines. Body wall thin and transparent.
Oceanic, young epipelagic, adults bathypelagic. Mainly in warm temperate to tropical waters. Plankton-feeders.
