Diagnosis: body elongate, compressed posteriorly, its depth (in adults) more than six times in SL. Premaxillae not forming a plate-like 'visor'; usually one upper gillraker. Pyloric caeca 5-8. Dorsal fin far back on body, its origin well behind anal fin origin; anal fin base long, more than twice length of dorsal fin base and with 35-39 finrays. Colour: pale brown to black. Size: to 34 cm.
Habitat: engybenthic at about 800-2,200 m usually at 1,200-1,800 m. Food: no data. Reproduction: ovarian eggs large (to 3.8 mm in diameter).
Distribution: in deepwater off Morocco, the Azores and southern Portugal northward (including southern Bay of Biscay) to Irish Atlantic slope. Elsewhere, southward to 19° 31' S, also western Atlantic (Bahamas, Gulf of Mexico and off Brazil at 25° 30' S).
