Body eel-like, jawless mouth, horny teeth, single nasal aperture opening into pharynx, a single or several pairs of external gill openings, lack of true lateral fins; one row of mucus pores low down on each side.
Found in saltwater only. They are scavengers, feeding largely on dead or disabled fish of any sort, into which it bores by means of its laterally biting tongue with opposed tooth plates. Eggs few, very large, keratinized with hooks. No larval stage.
