Diagnosis: skin completely smooth. Lips papillose. Dorsal finrays 8-9; anal finrays 8-9; caudal truncate or slightly concave. Colour: brown on dorsal, pale or whitish on ventral parts of body. Size: to 24 cm SL.

Habitat: muddy sand and rocks, 20-200 m. Food: no data. Reproduction: no data.

Distribution: the Azores northward to Portugal; also western Mediterranean (Sicily, Sardinia, Balearic Is., Spain). Elsewhere, in eastern Atlantic, Japan and Hawaii.
