Diagnosis: rings 16-20 + 31-39, D 28-42, P 13-17, total subdorsal rings 7-11. Snout length more than half head length, snout depth about 7 in snout length; dorso-lateral profile of snout nearly straight, not clearly concave before eye; median post-orbital portion of head not strongly elevated. Colour: grey to brownish; variable, sometimes mottled or with dark bars; dorsal finrays with dark spots. Size: to 38.6 cm TL.

Habitat: presumably as for S. acus. Food: no data. Reproduction: no data.

Distribution: southern Adriatic Sea, Black Sea and Sea of Azov, also reported from Lipari Is., Tyrrhenian Sea.
