Diagnosis: eye large, 5.5 7.6% TL. Posterior jaw teeth simple in adults. Peritoneum black. Anal finrays rarely 36, usually 37-41 or 42. Size: to 182 mm.

Habitat: benthic and pelagic in depths from 40 to 600 m, primarily 100-300 m, at temperatures usually less than O °C. Food: benthic and pelagic crustaceans. Reproduction: large eggs (2.1-2.7 mm) spawned during the summer and autumn; larvae pelagic.

Distribution: circumpolar: Greenland, Norwegian Sea coast of Iceland, Barents Sea, northern seas of the USSR, Arctic Alaska and Canada and Atlantic coast of Canada.
