Diagnosis: body broad and rounded anteriorly. Head length 2.3-2.6 times in SL. Disc small, its length 3.4-4.9 times in SL. First dorsal fin with 6-7 spines, not forming a crest, thinly covered by skin; all fin spines visible; second dorsal fin with 6-8 rays. Bony tubercles well ossified, absent from throat only, present on body, head and pectoral fin bases. Each spine of first dorsal fin with a pair of small tubercles at tip. Chin with fleshy dermal papillae. Dermal warts absent. Colour: Iive adults darker dorsally. Size: 132 mm, but usually do not exceed 100 mm SL.

Habitat: benthic on stony bottoms, usually at depths between 60 and 200 m, but occasionally to 400 m (one specimen from 930 m), in waters of -2 to +3 °C and oceanic salinity. Youngest individuals in shallowest water; larger specimens are much deeper. Food: poorly known; at least amphipods. Reproduction: probably spawns in early autumn, on hard bottoms in waters 20-30 m deep; ripe eggs 3.2-4.5 mm diameter.

Distribution: in the area, northern Barents Sea, Franz Josef Land, Spitsbergen, Iceland, northern Norway, coast of Greenland. Elsewhere, known from north-western Greenland, the Canadian Arctic and the Atlantic coast of North America south to Massachusetts.
