Diagnosis: body broad and rounded anteriorly. Head length 2.0-2.9 times in SL. Disc length 3.8-4.8 times in SL. First dorsal fin with 7 spines, not forming a crest; fin spines not visible, covered by thick skin; second dorsal fin with 11-13 rays. Bony tubercles strongly ossified, present on head, body, tail and first dorsal fin. Tubercles absent from pectoral fin bases and throat (occasionally a few very small tubercles present on lower jaw). Barbel-like chin appendages absent. Colour: olive, darker dorsally. Size: to 100 mm SL.


Habitat: benthic, on mud, gravel or stone bottoms in waters of 50-274 m depth and temperatures below 0°C. Young occur in shallower water than older fish. Food: unknown. Reproduction: apparently in late summer; ripe eggs 4-5 mm diameter.

Distribution: circumpolar above about 60° N latitude. In the area, known from the Arctic Ocean, the northern and eastern Barents Sea, Franz Josef Land, Spitsbergen and the east coast of Greenland. Elsewhere, known from north-western Greenland, Hudson Bay, the Kara, Laptev, Siberian, and Chukchi Seas and the Sea of Okhotsk.
