Diagnosis: body rather elongate, caudal peduncle slender (3.1-3.6% SL); oblique and fairly broad skin folds with finely serrated edges below lateral line, with small additional folds behind level of anus. Head fairly deep, its depth at eye 13.2-14.7% SL; eye large, 10.8-13.4% SL, greater than snout or post-orbital length of head; lower jaw slightly protruding. Tips of lower pectoral finrays not elongated; pelvic fins long (21-24% SL in males, 15-17% in females). D IX-XI + 24-28; A 24-28; P 20-22; 1.1. 48-50. Vertebrae 46-49. Colour: no dark blotches or bars on back, but 2-4 narrow dark stripes rising obliquely below lateral line; all fins hyaline, except a few dark dots forming transverse rows on lower pectoral finrays. Peritoneum dense black. Size: to 20 cm SL, usually 7-11 cm.

Habitat: benthic on muddy bottoms at (71) 200-600 (930) m, with temperatures below 0°C and salinities above 34.5‰. Food: planktonic crustaceans (Boreophausia inermis, Themisto oblivia, T. Iibelula, T. abyssorum, Calanus hyperboreus). Reproduction. spawns in late summer to early autumn; eggs demersal, about 600-1,000, diameter about 2.8-3.0 mm.

Distribution: eastern coasts of Greenland, Jan Mayen I., also Spitzbergen and northern parts of Barents Sea. Elsewhere, northern part of Kara Sea, Laptev Sea, Ungava Bay, off Labrador and in Baffin Bay near western coasts of Greenland.
