Diagnosis: head large with many spines and ridges, but without a deep occipital groove. First dorsal fin with 8-10 spines, anterior edge of first dorsal spine smooth; second dorsal and anal fins with 15 or 16 rays. Cleithral spine, above pectoral fins, very long and strong, greater than 15% SL and reaching backwards to the middle of the pectoral fins. Breast scaleless, belly partially scaled; lateral line scales small and tubular. Vertebrae 31 or 32 (11-12 precaudal and 19-21 caudal). Total gillrakers on first gill arch 7-11. Colour: red above, pale ventrally; dorsal, anal and pectoral fin membranes dusky, with small blue dots. Size: to 60 cm, usually to 30 cm.

Habitat: mud, gravel and rock bottoms from about 10 to 700 m, more generally above 400 m depth. Food: no data. Reproduction: no data.

Distribution: in eastern Atlantic from north of British Isles and North Sea to Walvis Bay; Madeira; Mediterranean except Black Sea.

Eggs, larvae and young stages. No data.
