Diagnosis: dorsal finrays 12 (11-13); anal finrays 13 (12); pectoral finrays 16 (15-17). Gillrakers 4 (rarely 5) + 1 + 10-11 (rarely 9 or 12), total 15-16 (rarely 14 or 18). AO 6 (5-7, rarely 4) + 5 (4-6), total 11 (10-13, rarely 9). Size: to 65 mm.

Habitat: high-oceanic, mesopelagic: day at 600-800 m; night at 51-500 m. (maximum abundance at 151-200 m). Size stratification with depth at night. Food: no data. Reproduction: sexually mature from about 40 mm. Spawning peak in late winter early spring (Hawaii).

Distribution: Atlantic: subtropical pattern (bisubtropical subpattern), between about 40° and 10° N and between 18° and 28° S (western sector); and between 41° and 14° N and between 8° and 30° S (eastern sector); Elsewhere: Indian Ocean (between 20° and 30° S), central and eastern North Pacific (30° N-15° S but with equatorial discontinuity).
