Diagnosis: dorsal finrays 22 (21-23); anal finrays 18-19; pectoral finrays 12-13. Gillrakers 7 (8) + 1 + 16 (15-17), total 24 (23-25). AO 9-10 + 6-7, total 15-17. Males with supra-caudal gland only, consisting of about 9 scale-like luminous segments. Size: to 106 mm.
Habitat: high-oceanic, mesopelagic: day at 375-1,000 m (maximum abundance at 500-1,000 m); night at 45-150 m (maximum abundance at 45-100 m). Reproduction: caudal glands in males develop at about 52 mm; size at sexual maturity unknown. Spawns in winter-spring.
Distribution: endemic Mediterranean: most abundant in western basin and in Ligurian and Tyrrhenian Seas.
