Diagnosis: dorsal finrays 12 (11); anal finrays 16 (15); pectoral finrays, 11 (10). Gillrakers 2 + 1 + 6 (5), total 9 (8). AO 6 + 6 (5-7), total 12 (11-13). Males with single large supra-caudal gland; females without caudal glands. Size: to 45 mm.

Habitat: high-oceanic, mesopelagic: day at 550 m to greater than 1,000 m; nyctoepipelagic in the upper few metres (but not at the surface) and down to 200 m. Food: no data. Reproduction: supra-caudal glands develop in males soon after metamorphosis; sexually mature from about 28 mm.

Distribution: uncommon, but not as rare as L. interrupta. Atlantic: broadly tropical pattern (holo-eurytropical subpattern), between about 46° N and 26° S. Elsewhere: Indian Ocean (between about 10° and 22° S) and Pacific (central water masses of northern and southern hemispheres and in eastern tropical region).
