Diagnosis: North Atlantic population: dorsal finrays 14 (13-15); anal finrays 17 (15-18); pectoral finrays 13 (12). Gillrakers 7 (6- 8) + 1 + 16 (14-18), total 24 (21-26). AO 7 (6-8) + 7 (6-8), total 14 (13-15). South Atlantic population: dorsal finrays 15 (14-16); anal finrays 17-18 (16-19); pectoral finrays 12-13 (14). Gillrakers 8 (9, rarely 10) + 1 + 17-18 (16, rarely 15, 19 or 20), total 26 (25-28, rarely 24, 29 or 30). AO 7 (6-8) + 7 (8, rarely 6), total 14 (15, rarely 13 or 16). Size: to 160 mm (North Atlantic) and 130 mm (South Atlantic).
Habitat: high-oceanic, mesopelagic: day at 550 to deeper than 1,000 m; night at 60-175 m (juveniles) and adults in upper 300 m (North Atlantic) and deeper than 800 m (South Atlantic). Food: no data. Reproduction: size at sexual maturity unknown.
Distribution: Atlantic: bitemperate pattern, between about 65° and 47° N (North Atlantic) and between the Subtropical Convergence and the Antarctic Polar Front (South Atlantic). Circumglobal in southern hemisphere between the Subtropical Convergence and the Antarctic Polar Front.
